In 1999, frustrated that Bend did not have a community event to honor Veterans Day, Veteran Mike Dolan paid for a parade permit and walked Wall Street alone, simply holding a flag. Soon after, Rabbine Harpell and others took on organizing an annual parade and the parade has grown larger each year, becoming a key event for the community and the 2nd largest parade in the State of Oregon. In 2015 Steve Esselstyn, a Bend police officer and Veteran, wanted to ensure Bend never again forgot to honor our community’s Veterans.  He  donated $2,000 to pay the parade permit fee for 10 years.  In his memory, COVO will honor Steve’s wishes and continue the Veterans Day Parade tradition with style.
