Veteran Stand Down, Bend Elk Club in September
Central Oregon Veterans Outreach is proud to be a part of the local Veteran’s Stand Down, providing resources and assistance to ALL Veterans, no matter when or where you served. Join us September 25, 2019 at the Bend Elks Lodge, 63120 Boyd Acres Rd, from 9a-3p.
What’s a Stand Down, you ask?
A little military history is always a good thing. For those of you who are unsure of what the term means, or the history behind it, read on. MilitaryConnection.com tells us that
“In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefields to a place of relative security and safety. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment.”[i]
The same theory holds true for our homeless Veterans, in that they’re given a temporary reprieve from the battle of living on the streets, to come together in a safe environment and access resources that can help meet their needs.
For all Veterans, the opportunity to come together with other servicemembers provides “… a sense of community and a feeling of hope …” that can be missing or limited in their daily lives. Veterans of all branches and all service eras are welcome – and Welcomed with Open Arms – to attend and connect with a variety of resources, including a free lunch!
Sponsored by COVO, the September Stand Down welcomes over 35 agencies or community partners who provide a broad range of services to Veterans.
Unlike in previous generations, where Veterans might have felt forgotten or neglected, today’s agencies understand the sacrifices made by our military servicemembers and feel an obligation to help in whatever way possible.
Some of the services which Vets can access include:
For those who are in need of help with the VA HUD-VASH program, there will be personnel available to help with wading through the regulations and requirements to get signed up for the program.
We will have representatives from WorkSource Oregon, Service Members and Family Employment Education Program, as well as the Tools4Troops program, which helps Veterans connect with industry specific tools to gain employment.
Outreach – Basic Necessities
For Veterans who are lacking some of the basic necessities, COVO will be providing tents, tarps, clothing, canned food and more. We will have a trailer on-site to connect Veterans with those items.
Health Screening & Medical
The Stand Down will be a resource for connecting to health screenings – to include HIV and HEP-C, as well as a VA medical enrollment counselor. Get the answers to your medical questions direct from the source. Oregon Health Plan staff will be there to answer your questions about OHP.
Counseling & Suicide Prevention
Counseling connections can be made at the Stand Down, with several different agencies, including Mission 22, Still Serving Counseling services, the VA Suicide Prevention program and the Vet Center.
Also slated to be in attendance are staff from Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles for IDs, the Bethlehem Inn, Haelan House, Redmond VFW, the Band of Brothers, Legal Aid and Social Security/Disability Insurance. Basic benefit counseling from the various listed agencies will be available.
All attendees listed are currently confirmed, but due to changing schedules, some programs/agencies may reschedule for the next Stand Down. We invite you to attend and take advantage of the services that are present, and shake the hand of a brother (or sister) military Veteran.
